Last night we had a good turn-out of around 200 people for the candidate’s forum at the college. I counted about 50 college students at the beginning, although I’m sure most of them left bewildered by the spectacle. One student, and a fellow blogger, posted his reactions here.
I found it amusing that he thought Hop was Vietnamese and he instantly disliked “that weird gray-haired white guy.” Although he “admired my passion,” he thought my presence in the race was “unnecessary” because Bob Wilcox and I obviously had the same positions. Had he been talking to Democratic Whip Kurt Cylke?
I found the format of the forum challenging, because I am not used to limiting my answers to one minute. It’s hard to answer complex questions in that amount of time and so we were mainly left with sound bites.
Here are a few that stuck out for me:
Wes doing his Joe McCarthy impression when asked whether he is under criminal investigation for voter fraud: “I have the names of three candidates right here that have done the same thing and I could turn those names over to the DA.”
John Zmich doing his impression of a team player: “It’s been fun to watch the other three candidates for Supervisor try to be the most pro-Lowes.” Thanks Buddy, and I was going to vote for you!
Watching Will and Patti pledge support for the Republican team when we know neither one is going to vote for the other.
Most pathetic moment: Patti saying that her biggest regret was being too tough on Planning Board Chair Dwight Folts. Patti you weren’t tough enough!
After the debate I talked to Jeremy Grace who told me that the plan for the college to do a poll on this race has been canceled. That’s kind of a relief. I don’t know what a poll would show, or how accurate it would be, but I believe people should vote for the candidate who best reflects their views without worrying about who the spoiler might be.
