In compliance with the NYS Campaign Finance Disclosure Law, I filed my 32 day pre-General Election report on Friday. Procrastinator that I am, I didn’t file it until the last half-hour before the 4:30 p.m., deadline.
Strangely, however, I discovered that even at that late hour, none of the other candidates, committees or parties involved in the Town of Geneseo election had filed their statements. Any candidate, or political committee that supports a candidate, that raises or expends more than $1,000 is required by law to file.
Perhaps they are all bigger procrastinators than me and there was a last-minute rush at the Board of Elections Friday afternoon. I hope so, because the penalty for failure to file a report can be as much as a $500 fine. More importantly, however, all candidates (not to mention the public) are entitled to know exactly how much money is being spent and where it is coming from.
In my case, the report was fairly simple. I have spent a total of $2,713. 72 to date and I have not accepted any political contributions. It seems certain that at least some of the candidates and committees have raised or spent more than the $1,000 threshhold, so I will be watching for their filings with great interest – and you can be sure you will find a full report here!
